Multi-Genre Research Proposal

My topic for my multi-gene research paper is going to be about fashion or racism. I know these two are nowhere near the same thing but I haven’t yet narrowed it down just yet. The reason why I want to do fashion is because fashion is the career field I will be getting into. I want to get my degree in fashion merchandising and become a buyer. A fashion buyer is a person who interacts with wholesalers and clothing manufactures to purchase lines of clothing, shoes and other fashion things. They also work really close with fashion designers. If I do end up doing this topic I will be interviewing my boss who owns Jonathan Alterations Plus. If I do further my research I hope to learn more background and maybe gain some advice to help me in the future. This topic is some meaningful to me because since I’ve worked in an alteration place for about four years now I love everything about it!

The other topic I might do is racism. Racism is the belief that some races of people are better than others.  The reason I wanted to do this topic is because I have witnessed many cases and not only with African Americans. This topic is a very heavy topic to talk about but it’s still a very serious issue that still goes on today. If I do, do this topic I would interview a lady in my youth group, pastor, or even a family member. If I do further my research on this topic I want to learn how these issues affect them and also more background on it. This topic seems meaningful because I witness things like this on a daily, but they may not be a big as others but I really want to see others inside on this.

Living Thin: One Grl's Fight for a FULL Life

By reading some of these stories the one about Anorexia stood out the most to me. I think it interest me so much because I didn’t really notice how serious it could be. And it’s really scary to think about that someone close to you could have it and not show any signs of it.  I’m not for sure how this could tie into my upcoming project but I know one thing I could think about is that you really can’t judge a book by its cover because truthfully you have no clue what they could be going through. Like for people who actually have to suffer with the sickness makes me so sad because I eat like crazy and to think that food could have so much of a negative impact makes me think more about the greater things in life; than just being stuck on the small unimportant things.

Kids Who Give Back

The millennium goal that I read was the 2010 UN Summit. This was about poverty, hunger and diseases. Even though we don’t have poverty and as many hunger issues around here we could still use this and it could help us. What I mean by this is that we can help people who have less than us; instead of just brushing it off your shoulder. Truthfully I thing helping the people who are in need could help in more ways than one.

The problem is that people are struggling; with hunger, diseases, and also living issues. These issues are effecting people’s lives every day. And it’s causing people to actually lose their lives. And it’s getting really bad and we all need to find a way to end this. The possible solution was to give vaccinations, cleaning up the streets and starting a food storage thing to help with the hunger.

The reason why this was so interesting to me because I really do like to know about major issues that effect other countries. This is because it allows me to see how lucky I am. I see this because sometimes you take your life for granted and other people are wishing that they could be in your shoes. It’s just sometimes good to know the major issues around you, besides just the issues and problems around you.

Reading Response Redo: A One- Time Opportunity

The article that I read talked about why punctuation and grammar are so important. Not only did they explain why they were so important, they also gave examples. They also mentioned that our easy communication could also have a really big impact on how we write. This is because when we text, tweet or something in those lines, we have a tendency to shorten things or berate. And as we do this on a regular it can and could affect how we write.

“Little things add up”, this passage stood out to me because it’s true. You may not have that many major mistakes in your writing but the tiny things can add up to a major problem. For instance it could just be that you forgot to put a few commas here and there; that doesn’t seem like much but if you do it more than once it could cause some issues in your writing.

“Is at an all-time high”, as I was reading this I really didn’t notice that all time didn’t have a hyphen. And that could become an issue, what I mean by this is that we over look things and it could be something small. But, we as whole really need to pay attention to those things so we can become better at grammar and making our writings better.

I really don’t have a connection to the rules, just by reading this makes me realize that I have a lot of work to do on making myself better at punctuation and also grammar. To me I really just think I just forget the tiny things and it causes more problems than I need. Reading this also gave me a better since on how to write. What I mean by this is that I need to work on expanding my vocab. And if I do this I feel like it could help me get my grammar in order. Another thing that could help me is reading more books and also practice.

Start Something That Matters: Reading Response #2

The three stories that I chose were Fashion 4 Freedom, Etkie, OAK Lifestyle. Fashion 4 Freedom is a social enterprise of design innovators. The vison is to establish a sustainable production; artisanal heritage, improves livelihoods of disadvantages. Etkie is a bottom line jewelry company that sources all of their products from struggling artisans. As for the OAK Lifestyle, they have bags that are high quality backpacks that result in a donated backpack and school supplies to a child in need, when purchased.

My passion is fashion. I love to create and make things that are different. The stories that I have read connect to me because they all are creative and they all think outside the box. When I get older I really want to have my own fashion line but first I want to become a fashion buyer. Also I noticed that in each vison they wanted to somehow inspire others. On the other hand while reading I found it interesting that they wanted to give back and help others around you. One of my other passions is to help people so that also ties into some of my future goals.

Not only did these stories just catch my attention because they are about fashion but they also make me think about other things that I could possibly do in this field. What I mean by this is that I could help people, make clothes, and also be happy with what I do. Also I feel like fashion is a way to express yourself not only with just clothes but it can help with other things. And me personally would love to have that impact on others.

The Pecha Kucha

The Pecha Kucha I listened to was about a skydiver who loved what she does. The presenter did a great job explaining her passion for skydiving. Something that suck out to me the most was when she talked about her injury. Not only did she talk about her injury but she told the listener about how her injury allowed her to push herself to get well so she could get back in the air to do what she loved to do; which was skydiving. So in other words she didn’t really look at her injury as a bad thing but she looked at it as a motivator.

Something that she could have improve on could be that she said a lot of “umms.”  I know this is a sign of nervousness, just maybe next time she could practice and try not to say that as much. As for the visual aspect, I really enjoyed the pictures were she was actually in the air skydiving. It allowed the listener a better understand on why she loved to skydiving. I say this because there wasn’t one picture were she was frowning and you can tell that she really loves this sport. Also I really don’t think she really talked to fast, but you could kind of tell that she was trying to fit all the information that she needed to give in that time proved.

I noticed that the presentation is really fast pace. And personally I think it’s kind of weird because the slides are moving constantly while you’re talking. I think for my project I can fit all my slides in and actually get it done. I just don’t really know how I feel about how I have to present for say. But Ill just practice to make sure I’m ready on the presentation day!

Fault in Our Stars

This book follows the main character Hazel, as she battles cancer. Hazel was not just only trying to live a normal 16 year life, but also struggled thinking about how her parent’s life would be after she pasted a way. As she attended church support groups for cancer survivor, she met a boy named Augustus. Augustus had a type of cancer that caused him to lose his leg and wear a fake one, it also had a high death rate than Hazels.

From the first glance Hazel and Augustus were nearly inseparable.  Their relationship ended up being in Hazel’s favorite book called An Imperial Affliction. She made Augustus read it, but in return he asked her to read the book that was based on his favorite video game. Hazel could relate to the main character in her book Anna because, Anna had a rare blood cancer. Both of them ended up having a bond over the book because they both had desires to find out how the story ends, but the author stopped the book before providing conclusion on what happened to each character.

Being the sweet person that Augustus was, he searched for the author to provide the answers that they needed. He even used a wish foundation to fly him and her to Amsterdam where the author lived to talk to him in person. While Hazel is the one that might be dyeing, Augustus ends up telling Hazel that at his recent cat-scan, the doctors found out that his entire body was filled with cancer. As Hazel found this out she spent the last few months caring and loving for him every day.

I truly loved how this book was written. The words were so well chosen that they drew you closer to the book, and had you think about not only the characters but also actually people in the world that are having to go through situations like these. It just really makes you think that life is too short to worry about the small things and also life is not promised to anyone. Another thing about this book that I liked was the fact that they both stuck by each other sides through the good and the bad. There was never a time where they questioned their love for one another. That's what you could consider true love!

I must say I have a witnessed a few close people to me who have had to battle some type of cancer. It’s hard to know that someone you care about is not feeling OK and to know that their life could be cut short is scary. But, truthfully the people that I have been around that were really sick had so much faith and they had such a strong back bone. Even though they were sick they always tried and keep a smile on their face even when the road got rocky.

Something that stuck out to me while reading this book was when Hazel said, "You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful."(page 260) It was just something about this that got to me. I think it’s the fact that she was so in love with Augustus, but she was still happy even though she was going through so much with her cancer. At the same time, we as people don't stop and think about how lucky we are at times and be grateful for the life that we have even though times get rough and things don't go our way we really should just take a second and say, "Someone could be worse off than me," and be grateful and fortune that we still are able to see another day.
